Update on Parish Sunday School and Confirmation

The Norman Davenport Parish Council met on September 7 to discuss the Parish Sunday School and Confirmation programs.  Much discussion was held on the confirmation program and how it could be improved to provide the best possible education for our Parish students. A couple of decisions were voted on unanimously by the Council.
1.  Confirmation will be held for 7th through 9th grade, with the 9th graders being confirmed on Reformation Sunday (last Sunday in October).  This would mean the 3rd year of confirmation would really only be a couple months long.  Confirmation class would begin after Labor Day.  Confirmation will be held on Wednesday evenings from either 6:00-7:00 or 7:00 -8:00 at Norman and Davenport churches. Classes would alternate between churches-September to December at one church and January to May at the other church. The class time (6-7 or 7-8) will be decided with parent input during the parent meeting being held this Rally Sunday at 9:45 at Norman Lutheran Church.
2.  Parish Sunday School will be offered for grades Pre-K through 6th grade.  Confirmation students will have some responsibilities during Sunday School time (more information to come on this from Pastor Laura when confirmation class is started). Youth group activities will continue to be offered for grades 7 through 12.

Snack Bags for Churches United

Thank you to all of you - it's so exciting that Kindred Lutheran, Comstock-Hoff Lutheran, Shepard of the Prairie Lutheran Parish and the Norman-Davenport Parish churches are able to commit to an entire school year of snack bags for Churches United for the Homeless!  They have been using the bags we've made in the past for both after school snacks and for the kids that wait in line for the food pantry, and they have been working out well.
Here is what we have been sending to Churches United over the past couple of years:
1.  We have been trying to send 150-200 bags at a time - we use zippered pint sized bags with about one small Styrofoam cup container of product in each bag.  If we send more than 200 bags, it's hard for them to use them in a timely manner before they go stale. The snacks will be accepted at any time, but if we all plan to aim to deliver our snack bags the first part of the month they will have a consistent supply.
Norman-Davenport Parish has a small budget built into our Sunday School account for service projects, but we also get the snack supplies by:
-Walmart and Sam's have been WONDERFUL about donating a $25 gift card to the cause.  Sam's will usually give you one that very same day and Walmart asks you to fill out a short donation form and will send it in the mail.
-We have been asking for donations from the Sunday School Kids for the snack Sunday (instead of offering we ask each class to bring something for the mix - Cereal for preschool, peanuts for first grade, etc.)  We learned we had to be pretty specific so we don't get too much of one item, but it's worked out well.
-We have also asked the congregation to donate items with great success.  We hang a list up of needed items (zippered bags, snacks) and put the info in our newsletter.  Some people will bring boxes of granola bars, rice krispy treats, or fruit snacks.  We just leave them in their boxes (instead of opening them and repackaging them) and donate to the shelter.
-we have passed an offering plate/can around and had the kids announce the product the Sunday before we do the snacks.  We use that money to buy snacks, too.
2.  Snack ideas
Churches United said they get a lot of sugary, bakery donations so they would prefer we try to send them healthy snacks to model good eating habits:
  • cereal with banana chips (Fleet Farm)
  • Chex mix
  • Trail mix - (Fleet Farm or Costco, already made up to just scoop into the little bags)
  • Salty mix - Chix in Bisquit, Cheezits, nuts of any kind
  • Pretzels with fruit - raisins, craisins
  • animal crackers with fruit - Sam's or Walmart large bear container
  • popcorn mix
**They are fine with any kind of nuts or cheese products, something that gets protein into the kids.
3.  We have been setting up tables with large bowls on each table.  We dump the different mixes into each bowl ahead of time.  When the kids come to make the bags, we have them each put on a pair of those clear food gloves (we buy at Sam's) and help them put one Styrofoam cup scoop into each bag.  We have had good success having the little people bring the bags from the "filling stations" over to another table where the kids are just zipping the bags and putting into a pile.
4.  We take a photo with the kids/bags and have them help load them into boxes/grocery/shopping bags for delivery.  Different families in our parish volunteer to drop off the bags at the shelter, but it would be fun for a older SS class, youth group or confirmation class to do to!  We usually call or email Lisa Lipari at Churches before we deliver (218.236.0372 or if she is not there we have dropped them off at the front desk.
Here is our Snack Schedule for September- May!  I put us each down for two months - if that's not ok let me know and I'll change it quick!
September 2016
If you have any questions or need more information let me know!  Otherwise, just contact Lisa Lipari at 218.236.0372 or LLipari@churches-united.orgwhen the snacks are ready and drop off in Moorhead at Churches United of the Homeless 1901 1st Ave North, Moorhead, MN 56560
Thanks- this will be fun!
